This holiday marks the birth of Jesus Christ and is observed with deep spiritual significance and vibrant festivities, particularly by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Celebration of Christmas Day Ethiopians commemorate Genna with great devotion, both in churches and within families. Many believers observe a fasting period leading up to Christmas, refraining from meat, dairy, and other rich foods for 40 days, known as the "Fast of the Prophets" (Tsome Nebiyat). On Christmas Eve, a special midnight church service, called Lelita Genna, is conducted with prayers and hymns. Common Traditions Church Services On Christmas Eve, people gather in churches to participate in prayers and chants that often last through the night. Worshipers wear traditional white garments, such as the "Netela", to signify purity. Festive Food and Drink A major highlight of Genna is the preparation and sharing of traditional meals. The main dish typically consists of Doro Wat (a spicy chicken stew) served with injera (a sourdough flatbread). Other delicacies, including roasted meat, vegetables, and festive bread called Himbasha, are also enjoyed. Traditional Games In some regions, traditional games are played to celebrate Genna. One popular game, also called Genna, is similar to field hockey and is played with sticks and balls. It is said to have been played by shepherds on the night of Christ's birth. The Spirit of Genna The celebration of Genna emphasizes family, unity, and spiritual devotion. It is a time for giving thanks, attending church, and sharing meals with loved ones. Its simplicity and rich cultural traditions make Ethiopian Christmas unique and deeply meaningful.
