Before the name Africa took hold: The real name is Alkebulan & Aethiopia. The continent was known by names that reflected its majesty and royal black people roots in today we call Africa. Alkebulan – one of the oldest known indigenous names – means “Mother of Mankind” or “Land of the Blacks.” It was used by ancient African civilizations to describe the cradle of humanity. Aethiopia – from the Greek word Aithiops, meaning “burnt-face” – was used by ancient Greeks to refer to lands south of Egypt, including large parts of modern-day Sub-Saharan Africa. In biblical and classical texts, Aethiopia was synonymous with great kingdoms, wisdom, and strength. It was never a single country, but a grand region populated by powerful Black civilizations. So, how did we get the name Africa? The name Africa is believed to have been derived from the Latin word “Afri”, a term Romans used to describe a Berber tribe near modern-day Tunisia. When Rome conquered Carthage (in present-day Tunisia) in the 2nd century BCE, they named the region Africa Terra, meaning “land of the Afri.” Over time, as European explorers and colonizers expanded their maps and power, the entire continent was labeled “Africa.” In doing so, the original names — full of pride, identity, and sovereignty — were erased from common use. But today, movements across the continent are reclaiming names like Alkebulan and Aethiopia, not just as historical facts, but as symbols of a deeper truth: Wake up - Africa must get back to her royal ancient name ( Alkebulan, Aethiopia )
