PLO Lumumba speaks about African education system
2025
In one of his powerful speeches, Professor PLO Lumumba passionately addressed the urgent need for Africa to reclaim its cultural and linguistic identity through education. He emphasized that teaching African children in foreign languages—primarily colonial languages like English, French, and Portuguese—continues to alienate them from their roots and identities. Lumumba pointed out a striking truth: “Go to any part of the world—be it China, Japan, Germany, or France—they educate their people in their own languages.” These nations have advanced technologically, economically, and intellectually by nurturing their people in a language they understand deeply and culturally connect with. He criticized the fact that Africa is the only continent still educating its children primarily in the languages of former colonial powers, calling it a form of mental colonization. In a voice of conviction, he declared, “This must change now!” Lumumba argues that true empowerment begins with language. Teaching in indigenous languages will help children think critically, connect with their heritage, and innovate for their societies. His message is a call to action for African leaders, educators, and parents: to decolonize the mind, restore pride in African identity, and shape a future rooted in self-determination and cultural strength.
