STOLEN — Australia’s 60-Year Secret For decades, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were forcibly removed from their families under Australian government policies. Not by accident. By policy. Authorities claimed they were protecting the children. But behind many of those policies was a devastating belief: that Indigenous identity could gradually be absorbed and erased from Australian society. Some officials even spoke openly about “breeding out the colour.” Children were taken to missions, institutions, foster homes and non-Indigenous families.
